The mission of the Columbia Archives is to collect,
preserve and make available to the public the
documentation of the history of Columbia, including
the planning, development and continuing physical,
institutional, governmental and cultural growth
of the planned new town and the life of James
Rouse, its founder. The Columbia Archives is a
community resource and a center for scholarly
research.
In support of its mission, Columbia Archives receives
donations of materials, makes the collection available
to researchers and schedules exhibits, programs
and group tours. The collections and exhibits
chronicle the history of the community and James
Rouse. Rouse was a national figure and a respected
voice on urban renewal in the 1950s, contributed
to the growth of the suburbs in the 60s and 70s,
addressed the problems of suburban sprawl with
the development of Columbia and drew national
attention to revitalization of urban downtowns
in the 80s and 90s.
