June 9 thru August 15, 2008
Monday thru Friday
9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Photographs of the General Growth Properties building, captured in different seasons and times of day by Gary Kubicek, will be on display at Columbia Archives from June 9 to Aug. 15. The photographs of the Frank Gehry-designed structure, built as headquarters of The Rouse Company in 1974, focus on how the time of day, season and weather change the award-winning building.
Columbia’s founder Jim Rouse and Gehry worked well together. The photographs in the exhibit reflect their shared vision. Rouse wanted a building that would be sensitive to the needs of the people who worked there, and Gehry understood that; they shared beliefs in people and human scale. In 1976, when the building was honored as one of the most human office buildings by the American Institute of Architects, Gehry wrote to Rouse, “Without your attitudes about how people should live and work, and your willingness to stick to your guns even when the going was rough, this project would never have been realized.”
“Views of a Vision” began on the day Kubicek was walking down the corridor in the early morning light. He was taken by how the sun reflected on the glass and walls. With a newly acquired digital camera in his hand, he began to shoot, and what he saw through the viewer impressed him. He understood, at that moment, that the building had a lot of potential, and he needed to explore it. He also realized he had to work quickly and often because the environment changes rapidly in the open, light-filled space.
